Activity Diagram – Node Types

In an Activity diagram, there are many Node Type options; the most commonly used types are Activity Horizontal Swimlane, Activity Vertical Swimlane, Swimlane, Action, and ActivityParameter. Examples of these are provided below.

Activity Horizontal Swimlane and Activity Vertical Swimlane

The Activity Horizontal Swimlane and Activity Vertical Swimlane node types specify the overall orientation of the activity diagram. Activity Horizontal Swimlane is the default selection and the most commonly used orientation.

Activity Vertical Swimlane example:

Swimlane

The Swimlane node type has to be nested within either an Activity Horizontal Swimlane (used in our example) or an Activity Vertical Swimlane. It represents the nodes that perform the activities in the model.

Action

The Action node type represents the activities involved in the model. An Action shape will not be displayed in the diagram until a relationship is created to nest it within a Swimlane shape (see below and how to create an OV-5b for examples).

ActivityParameter

The ActivityParameter node type defines any inputs to or outputs from the activities. An ActivityParameter shape will not be displayed in the diagram until a relationship is created to connect it to an Action shape.
